Establish fun, interactive, and supportive environments for elementary, middle, and high school students to develop their physical abilities and confidence. With a degree in K-12 physical education, you will teach students the importance of exercise and health education as youth, teenagers, and eventually as adults.

Program Overview

Becoming a physical education teacher requires a knowledge in a wide-variety of topics to meet the physical, emotional, and mental needs of K-12 students. Develop the skills and awareness to modifty activities for students with specific disabilities in a recreational setting. Gain a better understanding of the human body with exercise physiology, motor development, anatomy, and physiology. Plus, you will learn the ins and outs of health education within personal, family, and community health.

Deepen your calling and prepare for service. Concordia's Lutheran Teacher Diploma (LTD) prepares educators for service in LCMS schools through academic excellence, theological training, and faith integration, leading to divine calls and commissioned ministry. Learn more about the LTD here.

Physical Education Certificate

In an attempt to give Secondary/K-12 education students more potential areas of licensure, the School of Education offers this certificate. Please check with your advisor or program coordinator if you are able to take this program.

Student Learning Outcomes for the Physical Education Certificate:

The student will demonstrate, articulate, and apply core concepts, terminology, and principles,
in the basic sciences as related to motor skills and movement activities (e.g. anatomy and
physiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics and kinesiology, motor development,
motor learning and student growth and development).
The student will possess, demonstrate, and articulate basic knowledge and application in
management, motivation and communication.
The student will possess and apply the concepts and principles for student planning,
instruction, and assessment.

Curriculum:

Exercise Physiology, 3 cr
Motor Development, 3 cr
Biomechanics, 3 cr
Curriculum and Methods of Teaching PE-Elementary, 4 cr
Curriculum and Methods of Teaching PE-Secondary, 4 cr
While not listed in the program curriculum, it is recommended that secondary/K-12 education students take an additional methodology course that corresponds to this certificate.
Total: 16 credits
